The northern lights are only visible over Murmansk region during the dark season, when there is a real night. From late May to July it is polar day, and the aurora cannot be seen even during a strong storm.
Best months
The season runs from 21 August to late April. Based on our data from last season, the most active months are December, January and February: long nights and high geomagnetic activity.
Best hours
The peak is between 22:00 and 02:00. But clear sky is what really matters — watch the cloud forecast.
How to improve your chances
- Get out of the city, away from light pollution.
- Plan 3–4 nights for your trip.
- Check the Kp index and the Bz component.
